Engaging Youth and Families in Substance Use Treatment

December 10, 2018 . 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm

This training focuses on best practices for talking with youth and young adults about their substance use, and strategies to help those struggling with substance use to get the assistance they need at the right level of care. Topics include an overview of adolescent brain development, understanding the challenges and opportunities of adolescence within a developmental framework, identifying youth at highest risk for addiction, highlighting strategies to engage youth and young adults around the recovery process, and ways to engage parents/caregivers in the recovery process. We will review risk and protective factors, stages of change, the cycles of addition and recovery, the role of trauma and mental disorders, and considerations for working with parents/caregivers (those impacted by a loved one’s substance use as well as those who suffer themselves from a substance use disorder).

This training will include an overview of Motivational Interviewing as an evidence-based practice for engagement. We will discuss the underlining principles of Motivational Interviewing as a “way of being with clients” to elicit behavior change; review the four processes of Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning; and practice using Open-ended questions, Affirmation, Reflective listening, and Summarization (OARS) to help clients explore and resolve ambivalence about behavior change.
