Suicide Assessment and Intervention Training for Substance Use Disorder Treatment Providers

November 13, 2019 . 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Workshop Description:
Interventions to prevent overdose deaths in suicidal people will differ from interventions targeted at accidental overdoses. Yet most strategies for reducing opioid-overdose deaths do not include screening for suicide risk, nor do they address the need to tailor interventions for suicidal persons…These two epidemics are intermingled, and solutions to address the opioid crisis require that we tailor interventions to preventing opioid overdose deaths due to suicidal intent.” – Oquendo & Volkow (2018) This full-day training is designed to increase knowledge and improve the skills and confidence of substance use treatment clinicians and others who find themselves identifying high-risk youth and adults, and planning for their care. Participants will learn about the scope of the problem of suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and deaths among people with substance use disorders, review current information on suicide risk factors, and examine personal reactions to dealing with suicidal behaviors. Ways in which opioid use and suicidal thoughts and behaviors are risk factors for each other and points during the addiction and recovery processes where risk of suicide may increase will be discussed. Best practices in risk assessment will be presented, and attendees will learn techniques for eliciting suicidal ideation. The training is based on current best practices and reflects the training objectives in the 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.

Participants will be able to:
• Describe the scope of the problem
• Provide a clinically accurate definition of suicide
• Identify ways in which substance misuse and suicide intersect and are risk factors for each other
• Manage personal reactions to suicidal clients
• Review suicide warning signs and risk and protective factors and ways substance use intersects with them
• Identify ways to elicit suicidal ideation and history of behaviors.
• Identify strategies and tools to formulate/describe risk.
• Understand ambivalence around suicide and the idea of suicide as a coping strategy.
